How To: Alcohol Ink Canvas Art 👩‍🎨

Updated: Oct 4, 2023

Our arts & crafts group tried alcohol ink on a canvas and everything came out SO BEAUTIFUL. Super simple and a perfect beginner's craft to try at home.

What we used:

  • Alcohol Ink Paper - this paper was incredibly glossy and was perfect for alcohol ink. It really made the colors pop

  • Alcohol ink (Base) - the colors were vibrant and came with a nice variety of colors. I've read the best brands of alcohol inks to buy are Pinata, Copic and Tim Holtz

  • Alcohol Ink (Metallics) - in addition to the base colors, we used some metallics as well. I highly recommend getting some metallic alcohol inks in addition to the base as they add that nice gold shimmer and an additional dimension to your art

  • Isopropyl alcohol (as close to 100% alcohol as you can get)

  • A pipette or something to drop the alcohol onto your canvas in small drops

  • A straw or hairdryer

  • Optional: Disposable gloves and a smock because alcohol ink can get messy!

How to:

All you need to do is drop the alcohol ink onto your canvas, and add drops of alcohol which dilutes the color and adds a different pattern and dimension to your piece. Here's a great video I found that explains the process. You can use the straw or hairdryer to push color throughout the canvas. It's fun to combine all the colors and see what you get. Here are a few images from our craft event where complete beginners made these beautiful pieces!
